There's a reason they call it beauty sleep | VILASA.

A night of good sleep is just as important as regular exercise and a healthy diet. However, we quite easily trade sleep in for one more episode on Netflix or extra time on social. Achieving the all-important 8 hours of sleep each night is vital to our overall wellbeing.

There's a reason why they call it beauty sleep. The time when you are asleep is when your body is repairing from the day past and recharging for the day ahead. Regular sleep is essential for good health and clear skin. The hours, while we are asleep, are the most effective time for your liver to cleanse the blood. It is also time when your cortisol level decreases and the skin receives a much-needed boost of oxygen. Cellular regeneration also peaks during this time, making it the perfect natural anti-ageing solution.

Here are tips on how we can get 8 hours of beauty sleep every night.

Increase bright light exposure during the day

Your body has a natural time-keeping clock known as your circadian rhythm. It affects your brain, body and hormones helping you stay awake and telling your body when it's time to sleep. You can help keep your circadian rhythm healthy by increasing your natural sunlight exposure during the day to improve daytime energy as well as nighttime sleep quality and duration. When it comes to the evening time, swap bright lights for candlelight, the marocMaroc Bois de Sucre candle with ingredients of orange blossom, cedar, cinnamon, with a note of fresh almond will also scent your home with a warming aroma, perfect for winding down.

Turn off your tech

One hour before bed turn off your phone, TV and laptop all of these things stimulate your mind and give off blue light tricking our body into thinking it is daytime, not ideal an hour before bed! Swap tech for a book, relaxing music or meditation as a way to unwind. Why not use the time to take care of your skin too by applying a face mask. The marocMaroc Very Purifying Mask will leave skin pure, fresh and perfectly clean ready for bed. Follow it up the with the Nourishing Face Cream from marocMaroc or Daily Moisturiser from Gentlemen's Tonic both work at drip-feeding the skin at night.

Take a bath

A bath before bed is proven to help you drop off to sleep. Create a calming environment by lighting a candle and using a bath oil with aromas that allow you to unwind. The luxury warm vapours of the l'Or dans l'Eau Bath oil from marocMaroc transforms into a milk bath on contact with water to nourish the skin and deeply relax the mind.

Avoid caffeine

Avoid drinking caffeine any later than 3-4pm, as caffeine stimulates your nervous system and may stop your body from naturally relaxing at night. Instead, swap your coffee for a decaffeinated or even herbal tea. Chamomile or passionflower tea two hours before bed can help to reduce anxiety and calm your mind.

Choose foods that help you sleep

There are four main vitamins and minerals found in food that aid in promoting sleep: tryptophan, magnesium, calcium, and B6 helping to produce melatonin, the hormone that is responsible for regulating the circadian rhythm. Foods such as Turkey, Almonds, Cherries (not necessarily all together) are examples of food that contribute to catching 40 winks.

By tweaking our nighttime routine, we can improve our overall health and get that all-important beauty sleep!
